A curated list of the internet’s finest 25 DIY propagation station ideas that are both cute and practical. These are a fab way to add more greenery to your home . . . and grow more baby plants!
Are you even alive in 2021 if you don’t have at least the beginnings of a plant collection? I’m inclined to think no. Or that you’re some kind of cyborg – because, otherwise, how on earth did you make it through numerous lockdowns without plants? I could never.
How to know when your plant love is becoming a bit of an obsession? I think there’s an argument to be made that it’s as soon as you understand the meaning of the word propagation. (Unless everyone else’s science syllabus was better than mine . . . )
Propagation is when you split your plants up, either by taking cuttings or literally dividing them, to make new babies. Essentially: free plants! It’s great – albeit, the other side of that knife also means that your home can quickly become overrun.
Alas, I’m sure there are worse fates out there.
Today, I wanted to share some of my favourite DIY propagation station ideas with you. These are so incredibly cute and turn your plant babies from clutter into home decor. So you’re no longer hoarding; you’re decorating. Shall we get into it?

Check Out My Upcycled Diffuser Into A Propagation Station!

Since publishing this roundup of fun DIY propagation stations, let’s just say I was inspired – and I made my own! Using paint markers and an old diffuser bottle, this beauty consists of fun doodles . . . and makes a cute centrepiece item. Check out my tutorial here or below to learn how to recreate this at home!
#1 – Convert Test Tubes Into A Living Wall
Idea one is a throwback my old followers may remember! On my old website, I shared a super easy tutorial for creating a DIY propagation station test tube wall. This is super cost-effective (a pack of 30 test tubes will only set you back $14.99) and looks fantastic in every room.
Bonus points for this method being completely renter-friendly! The tubes are held up by command strips, so they leave no damage on your walls.
(We just moved out of the place I had these installed in, so I can 100% confirm this too.)

#3 – Upcycle Vintage Ink Jars For Plant Cuttings

#2 – Try A DIY Test Tube Propagation Station For Your Windowsill
I promise this list won’t be entirely test tubes, okay. However, the brilliant By Brittany Goldwyn shared this great tutorial for a space-effective (and chic) propagation station you can slot onto your windowsill.
This one is a little more of a project as you will need to drill holes for the glass jars – but it’s a great way to use up some scrap wood! (Not to mention, it would make a fabulous DIY gift idea for a plant lover . . . )

Cheekily, this is another one of my craft ideas . . . but I totally stand by it! Ix ended up buying a bulk lot of vintage ink bottles from Ebay over Halloween and they’re the perfect size for plant cuttings. (Not to mention: way cuter than your typical glass jars and sustainable.)
Check out my video tutorial below to see these in action . . .
#4 – Blend Style & Practicality With Propagation Shelves

#5 – Create A Table Centerpiece With A Propagation Tray
I love this idea because not only is it cute . . . but it can also be gifted! You could easily use jars from your recycling bin, or invest in some high-quality vases.
Here are some funky vases I’m loving at the moment:
#6 – DIY A Rustic Hanging Propagation
Our new apartment is definitely more of a modern vibe – but I still absolutely love vintage chic. This rustic farmhouse propagation station is the perfect addition to any kitchen – and is shockingly easy to recreate.
(Not to mention, cheap!)
If you’re an avid crafter, you’re likely to already have these items lying around your home.

#7 – Upcycle Old Furniture Into Funky Vases
You can probably tell by some of my selections for this list, but I’m a strong advocate for re-purposing and upcycling things you may otherwise throw out. This tutorial is fabulous at showing you how to take trash and quite literally turn it into treasure!
#8 – Add Some Farmhouse Chic With This Wall-Mounted DIY Propagation Station
I’ve never considered repurposing an old photo frame into a hanging DIY propagation station . . . and I’m willing to throw my hands up and say I missed a trick!
This craft is so cute – if you were going to recreate it for your kitchen, you could even put fresh herb cuttings in water and allow them to grow roots. Our kitchen doesn’t get enough sun for this, unfortunately, but someone please leave out my dream for me!

9. Add Boho Flair To Your Home With This DIY Plant Terrazzo Cutting Jar
If you aren’t already following Tina Le, you are missing out! She creates the chicest boho DIYs over on Youtube and is a constant source of inspiration.
I actually missed this mini-project until I started researching this article – but I’m definitely going to give it a try over the weekend. Everything about it is just so deeply adorable.
10. Buy Or DIY These Modern Arch Hanging Propagation Tubes
I confess: these propagation wall brackets are definitely more of a project than the other additions to this list. However, if you’re skilled with power tools – or you just want to learn how to use them – it’s definitely worth a try! The tutorial is informative and easy to follow . . .
Plus, just look at the finished product! So modern and cute.
If you’re like me in that you’re a. lazy and b. scared of power tools, you can also buy these premade.

11. Add Some Cottage-Core To Your Home With These String Propagation Jars
The rest of this list is for those of you who love window shopping! (I definitely do…)
I’ve scoured Etsy for some of the cutest handmade propagation stations. So, if you prefer to buy over DIY, you can feel good about supporting small businesses!
12. Buy This Witchy Faux Crystal Station For Some Everyday Magic
What, what, what? How beautiful is this faux crystal set up? This is perfect for any witchy altar or bohemian home. Honestly, guys, I am obsessed.

13 . Terrazzo Wall Mounted Propagation Holders
Recently, I’ve been loving a pop of colour in my home decor. It’s summer here and I’m here for anything bright and fun! These terrazzo wall mounts are a super fun way to display plant cuttings in your home – which colour would you choose?
14. Daisy Resin Tube Holder
As your resident DIY-er, resin has always been a much-loved material in my crafting arsenal. That being said . . . it sure is messy! (In fact, my partner has put a permanent resin ban on our new apartment to avoid any damages. Which is smart but also sad.)
This pre-made resin test tube holder, though? So beautiful!
I love that there are pressed flowers peeking through and the entire piece works so well as a little side table addition.

15. Minimal Cutting Holders
These are to die for. That is all.

16. Add A Boho Touch To Your Home With These Propagation Tubes
Everything about these is big yes energy.
The colour scheme? Love. The designs? Modern yet versatile. Price point? Cheap. Supporting a small business? Duh.

17. Buy A Wood Shelf For Plant Cuttings
Were you even on Instagram last year if you didn’t see “shelfies” featuring these mini wood shelves?
18. Vintage Look Brass Propagation Tray
Ugh, all the vintage vibes! I am deeply in love with this little bud set and can easily envision it on a dressing table.

19. Wall Mounted Hand Vase Holder
Quirky home decor that allows your personality to shine through is hands down my favourite! I love this hand-shaped propagation vase . . . I have no idea how to describe it, but it’s fun and weird and I kind of want to try a DIY version myself . . .
20 . Triangular Wall Vase Holder
Girl, this photo came and hit me with the vibes. I love it. The shape? Modern, funky, fresh. The colours? Perfect for whatever vibe you have going on in your home.
You could easily create a little gallery wall out of these hangings. Maybe with some flowering plants like the tricolour wandering jew? That could be stunning!

21. Macrame Hanging Propagation Station
Macrame is high on my to-do list for 2022. It’s super cheap, easy to learn – and has all the boho beach vibes. If you love the look, but don’t want to make it for yourself, you can buy this space-effective macrame propagation station from Etsy!

22. Industrial Vintage Bottle Hanger
So much yes – so little time! I would love to recreate this myself for our kitchen. (Could anyone else also totally see these being hung up in a hipster brewery? I’d drink there!)
23. Get The Trend With These Boho-Chic Arch Propagation Stations
I’ve been obsessed with the arch trend we’ve seen crop up over the past few years. Arch shelves, arched murals – and even arch propagation stations! These come in a range of warm tones so (again) they’re perfect for any gallery wall.
Bonus points as they’re totally nail-free – so you can use these even if you’re renting!

24. Dark Wood Propagation Display & Shelf
If we still lived in our old home, I would be tempted to buy these! I’m an avid lover of dark wood and anything slightly witchy . . . However, I’m also deeply impressed with its practicality. Not only could you use this as a propagation station – but also just as storage!
25. Copper Pipe Test Tube Holder
And our last addition to this list is actually one of my favourites! It’s a super quirky copper pipe propagation station that’s perfect for adding a little industrial decor to your home. This is definitely something I want to either buy or DIY in the future – so keep your eyes peeled!
Alright, my friends, with that I think this post is complete! It’s only fitting that the first post on this new site should be dedicated to my one true love: plants.
