Learn how to DIY a crescent-moon-shaped shelf using cardboard and plaster. Perfect for displaying crystals!
Guys. Guys.
Remember that time I upcycled a piece of cardboard into an arched jewelry holder? Well, I was deeply inspired by that concept – and how easy it was to make. So today is more of the same but with a crescent moon shape. And I’m obsessed.
Admittedly, this is a Tumblr circa 2012 kinda craft. She will likely be sold on Facebook Marketplace for another home. However, the concept? Fabulous. We will be making more – and in more creative shapes.
(I’m thinking a mushroom next but any suggestions are welcomed . . .)
I was wondering what to use this bad boy for and then capitalism kicked in. My most popular post at the moment is 50 ways to display crystals, so why not create a little DIY crystal shelf? It fits the theme of the crescent moon perfectly.
Anyways, you’re going to love this craft for three main reasons:
In fact, it cost me literally nothing to make as I already had all the supplies. But, had I needed plaster, a tub only costs $8! Shall we get into the making?
WHAT YOU NEED:
- Cardboard box
- Hot glue gun
- Joint compound/plaster
- Plastic spreader or plastic gloves
- Sanding Paper
HOW TO MAKE:
As always, I have a handy TikTok tutorial you can check out too!
- Cut a crescent moon shape out of cardboard. This will work as the back of your shelf.
- Making sure your card lines are horizontal, cut a thin and long strip of cardboard to use as the border for your shelf. Bend along the lines to create a curve shape.
- Hot glue down the border.
- Cover in joint compound, building layers until you’re happy with the thickness. Leave to fully set.
- Sand down for a smooth finish.
- (Optionally) Puncture two holes in the side and feed rope through them. Use these to hang your shelf!
See – this is super easy and fun to make! You could totally try out different shapes too; a few I like are the peace symbol, a heart, flower . . . (Okay, I understood the assignment: we will make a funky daisy shelf. Maybe with a fun cow print?)
Anyways, my loves, we shall end at the end! I hope you enjoyed this craft – would you recreate it yourself? What shapes would you try out? Let me know your thoughts down below!
